Good morning!   Today I'm going to talk about a person I admire, whose work was an example and that allowed her to be renowned worldwide. I am referring to Frances O. Kelsey.   Why do I admire her? Because of her determination. Not only did she dedicate her life to scientific and medical research, but she was a woman who had the courage and the intelligence to confront the large pharmaceutical industries of the United States in the 60s.   Frances was born on July 24, 1914, in Canada. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University in 1934, and later completed a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. In addition, she studied Medicine in 1946. Since leaving college, in 1960, she was hired by the FDA in Washington DC as a drug reviewer. Unfortunately, after receiving several awards, she passed away in 2015, at the age of 101.   She contributed to avoiding a national health crisis that would have caused the death of thousands of fetuses in the United St...

How Can Your Major Make the World a Better Place

Imagen
Good evening Today I will answer how the career that I study can help make a better world. I consider that the pharmaceutical chemist is a very relevant professional in various areas of society, mainly because he fulfills a function of support and advice to patients. Has it happened to you that you don't understand the doctor's instructions? I think so, and maybe many times, well, their job is to inform or explain treatments to patients.                                          The above is a daily task of this profession in public health and pharmacy, but this career not only does this, but it also contributes to drug research and development, carries out quality control and regulation, these tasks being very important to improve people's health. In this process of becoming a pharmaceutical chemist, I see myself working in one of the many performance areas of this career, how...

A Meal Or Food You Really Like

Imagen
Hello everyone. My favorite food are the legumes, especially the lentils. My mother cooks them very well! She prepares some delicious lentils. According to your recipe, I must first rinse and clean them, then soak them for at least 8 hours and boil them for 30 minutes. At the same time, I must wash, peel, and cut the carrot, the onion, the bell pepper, the pumpkin, and the potatoes. Then I must fry these vegetables and add the seasoning, for example salt, cumin, and garlic. Finally, to the boiled lentils I must add the fried vegetables and 2 tablespoons of rice, until the vegetables and rice are tender and boiled. I love lentils because they are a delicious dish to eat all year round, especially in winter. Moreover, the lentils have a positive impact on my health because they have, for example, protein, carbohydrates, iron, potassium and magnesium, nutrients necessary to prevent diseases such as anemia. Today I ate lentils with fried bread on top!

My Favourite Piece Of Technology

As for many people, my favorite piece of technology is the cell phone.  It’s my favorite because with it I can do many things, for example, I can inform myself about national and international news, I can make electronic payments, as well as I can communicate with my family, listen to music, watch movies in free time, take  photographs, download files to study and I can connect on social networks.   I use my cell phone near me all day, especially to see files of study and to talk with my family. My cell phone affects my life positively, because it allows me to save time on tasks that I used to do personally, and that now, I can do as many times as I want from the screen my cell phone. I recommend this piece of technology because it has made my life easier!

Why did I choose my major?

Imagen
I’m currently studying Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Chile. I chose this career because I like the chemistry and biology, especially subjects related to the human body.   When I was a child, I wanted to study medicine or dentistry because I didn't know other careers and I played doctor with my dolls, but when I grew up and found out about scientific careers, I loved them. I finally decided to study this career because it has many areas to learn, I can help others and it has many employability possibilities. Also, my university experience has been good so far, but I feel that it has been short due to the two years of pandemic, where I had classes online and only, I was hours in front of a computer.

Who Am I?

Hello!  I’m going to tell you a bit about myself, my hometown, and my family.  My name is Denisse Pérez and I’m from the south of Chile, Penco. I’m a Chemistry and Pharmacy student at the University of Chile and I currently live in Santiago because I must attend classes. I love Penco. It’s a beautiful city and a good place to live because it’s a small and quiet city. Moreover, it’s cold and rainy in winter, but it’s sunny in summer because it’s by the sea.                                                      I'm only child and until March I lived with my parents. They work but enjoy life visiting new places with their friends.   Santiago is a great city, but Penco is my home!
